Albion College’s Institutional Advancement Office and Office of Annual Giving, departments which work with alums and donors, are planning an event called Tuition Free Day.
Funded by the Institutional Advancement Office, Annual Giving Department, Donors, Alum and Student Alumni, the event will take place in the Kellogg Center on Founder’s Day.
“It’s really easy to go through four years here and not recognize that the building, activities, or programs came from somewhere else,” said Trajan Dubiel, director of Annual Leadership Giving. “It’s geared towards education for our students to let them know it’s more than just tuition that lets them come to Albion.”
The event is to spread knowledge and awareness to the students before they become alumni.
“Tuition Free Day is the day eighty percent of the way through the school year where we recognize that our tuition symbolically ‘runs out’ and donor contributions kick in to pay for our education,” said Emily Webb, White Lake Senior, who inters with the Annual Giving Department.
Someday, students will graduate and move on but are encouraged not to forget where they came from. Plenty of Albion College’s staff and alumni give back to the school now, but they didn’t always.
“We want students to not only recognize the donor we have now but also that they will one day be the donors who provide for future Albion students,” Webb said.
The event will have guests teaching and speaking about being a donor, but there will also be fun games, lots of food, giveaways and prizes.
“Having an educational day would be fabulous,” said Arielle Smith, Columbus, Ohio sophomore. “It would be really promotional and beneficial because a lot of people probably don’t understand how much the donors do for us.”
Appreciating the people who help the school move forward could be an important learning experience.
“This is an opportunity to let current students know how to make Albion College better, to make it stronger,” said Dubiel.
