On the Hunt – Albion hunt seat team hopes to impress this weekend before Regionals

The Albion equestrian team’s regular season ends this weekend but they still have plenty to look forward to.

Miranda Voege, Carmel, Ind. sophomore, Lannis Smith, Northville senior, Sarah Behrandt, Walled Lake senior and Ruthie Doering, Cadillac junior have already qualified for Inter Collegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Regionals this season.

“Our season is going really well, we have 4 girls qualified for Regionals so far,” said Voege.  “We have our last horse show this weekend here at Albion’s equestrian center, so more girls could potentially qualify on Saturday.”

Voege qualified for the intermediate over the fence competition at regionals on Monday, November 6 2011 at the University of Michigan double-header.

Hunt seat team captain Lannis Smith has been qualified for regionals since Saturday October 29 2011. On that day Smith took second place in the Saginaw Valley State competition for the intermediate flat competition.

“I have been captain of this team for three years now so at his point I feel like I can handle any situation,” said Smith.  “I feel more comfortable being able to lead the group and know that they will look to me for advice and knowledge.”

The women’s equestrian team is currently ranked third in a region of twelve, which includes the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Western Michigan University. Meredith Michalec, Rochester Hills first year has been a big part of the teams success this year.

“Meredith has had a very successful season this year,” said Voege.  “She has won almost every show that she has competed in.”

This weekend the equestrian team has an opportunity to add more riders to their roster for the IHSA Regionals.  The Britons have had a few weeks to prepare for their next competition, which will be held at Albion College’s very own Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center.

“This is our last show to qualify for regionals which are Sunday, February 19th,” said Smith.  “For this show both Sarah Behrandt and Jane Fillmore are one point away from qualifying for regionals.”

With an opportunity to strengthen their already formidable line up look for the Britons to have strong performances from everybody this weekend.
