Eating Good(rich) — Students host dinner for faculty members

A group of faculty members met last weekend at the Goodrich Club, but it wasn’t for something as formal as a committee meeting.

On Saturday, March 27, 13 professors and their guests dined on a homemade meal prepared by the residents of Goodrich Club.

“An annual faculty dinner used to be a time honored tradition at the Goodrich Club, but it has been held sporadically at best for the past four or five years,” said Chelsea Marsh, Elk Rapids sophomore and Goodrich Club resident. “I can’t believe how well it all came together this year. Guests showed up at 6:15 p.m., and the food was ready to be served by 7 p.m. It was perfect.”

Cuisine served included chicken cordon bleu, rosemary-garlic mashed potatoes, homemade apple pie and hard apple cider on tap.

According to Marsh, during a weekly meeting at the beginning of spring semester, Goodrich Club residents agreed that the dinner should be held. The faculty dinner was planned before the Board of Trustees released their mandate. Wax-sealed invitations were sent to approximately 25 faculty members, who club members had either had classes with or worked with through a college program, prior to spring break.

Faculty in attendance came from various departments, including  philosophy, biology, anthropology, history and English.

“The Goodrich Club residents prepared a delicious homemade meal that was savored in a warm atmosphere of lively conversation,” said Dan Skean, professor of biology.  “The chicken cordon bleu and apple pie were to die for. I was very pleased to have been invited and hope to be invited again.”

After dessert was served, a guest suggested that someone play one of the instruments in the living room. Marsh handed a guitar to Jeremy Kirby, professor of philosophy, and the pair played a duet of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”

“Chelsea was kind of enough to give me a guitar lesson,” Kirby said. “The quality of the food was equaled only by the quality of the conversation.  It was a very nice time for sure—one of those events that reinforces your impression of what a neat place Albion is.”
