Timeline: Albion’s ‘Self-Determined’ Black Community

A collage of photos of varying quality and from a range of time periods. Over the collage is large graphic gold text reading “Albion’s Black History.” Illustrative black squiggles pass over two opposite corners.
A timeline showing what Albion historians and residents Bob Wall and Akaiia Ridley, alumna ‘22, said are some of the most important moments in Albion’s Black history. “Black history is American history, the same way that immigrant history is American history,” Ridley said. “There is not one person in history that did it all by themselves” (Illustration by Bonnie Lord).

  1. Thanks for the history overview. Bobby Wall was my junior high school teacher! Smart man.
Albion was segregated during ny father’s youth 4]s and 50s) and still somewhat in the 70s. When I attended Albion College in the mid 80s it was 93% white and articles such as this would have never been published.
    Thank you.
